Poets in and out of fashion

Dipping into one of my poetry book collection I re-discovered Walter de la Mare. I love this extract, which leaves me with a wonderful feeling of belonging to something old and precious.

Very old are the brooks;
And the hills that rise
Where snow sleeps cold beneath
The azure skies
Sing such a history
Of come and gone,
Their every drop is as wise
As Solomon.

This is from his poem – All That’s Past

Snow in winter? Surely not!

Waiting for the much vaunted snow yesterday – really a few swirling flakes which disappeared like snow in harvest as the rain set in – I thought of the Japanese idea of Renga, collaborative poetry with a lot of discipline. Being a lone poet and not having much poetic discipline I decided to have a go anyway, here is my attempt –
5/7/5 7/7

Waiting for snow storm
bright sky heralds laden clouds
moon seeing all weeps

flurries start then blizzard swirls
all is still except snowflakes

Enjoy the winter if you can, the earth is just sleeping, soon she will awake and spring will work her magic once more, we will be patient.

Very best wishes – Denny Bradbury

Passing Storm at Sea

We are often surprised by the winter weather, which is slightly ridiculous as it IS winter. Perhaps we just love to talk about the weather.

Young noise, old ears
bright welcome in the cafe
storm rages outside
sea whipped up
to white fervour on grey

small fishing smack
struggling to reach safe harbour
she loses sight as it dips beneath the heavy seas
coffee and cake
rain drips off her hat
onto the polished table

young noise fades
as she tunes into the storm
suddenly she notices
light on the horizon
from the west
winter storm is passing
welcome light holds future promise

Happy New Year

I wish you all joy and a blessed 2015

What more can we say at this time of year,
When cold is outside while to warmth we draw near;

we huddle in coats, or by fires do we stand,
then at midnight we join as we sing holding hands;

We offer our loved ones the best they can wish
we laugh as we hold them sealing all with a kiss.

very best wishes to all for a happy and peaceful year ahead – Denny Bradbury
