Denny Bradbury poetry, Spring Poem

Following my morning walk in the brisk spring light I felt an overwhelming sympathy with the tiny birds that flew in and out of the hedgerow:

Singing In Hope

Tiny finches carol away trying to attract

morning sun and unsuspecting insects

showing off to their mate;

punching above their weight in song

puffing out chests in sheer delight,

darkness recedes – here comes the light!

Best wishes for a day filled with light – Denny Bradbury

Edward Thomas, Spring Poem, The Wind's Song - Sonnet

This glorious sonnet so wonderfully expresses the feeling of despair lifted by being still in Nature, in this instance – the West wind. Reading this I am always there with him, listening.

Edward Thomas – The Wind’s Song

Dull-thoughted, walking among the nunneries
Of many a myriad anemones
In the close copses, I grew weary of Spring
Till I emerged and in my wandering
I climbed the down up to a lone pine clump
Of six, the tallest dead, one a mere stump.
On one long stem, branchless and flayed and prone
I sat in the sun listening to the wind alone,
Thinking there could be no old song so sad
As the wind’s song; but later none so glad
Could I remember as that same wind’s song
All the time blowing the pine boughs among.
My heart that had been still as the dead tree
Awakened by the West wind was made free.

Very best wishes – how wonderful if the World found some stillness in which to recover its balance – Denny Bradbury

Japanese poetry, Kenneth Rexroth, Spring Poem

From the 12th and 13th centuries, across the years,  this verse on Spring is from Kenneth Rexroth’s Written on the Sky – Poems from the Japanese and is by Fujiwara No Teika

The Spring night’s
Floating bridge of dreams
Breaks off. The clouds banked
Against the mountain peak
Dissipate in the clear sky.

I love the imagery of the ‘Floating bridge of dreams’ and have written similar thoughts in my 21st century prose. However the clarity of the form above brings a wonderful focus.

Very best wishes – Denny Bradbury
