Denny Bradbury - Advent, John Betjeman - Christmas

Whatever your beliefs this time of year holds much hope for something good – better even than the outgoing year. If you have time do read all of John Betjeman’s poem Christmas which starts off:

The bells of waiting Advent ring,
The Tortoise stove is lit again
And lamp oil light across the night
Has caught the streaks of winter rain
In many a stained glass window sheen
From Crimson Lake to Hooker’s Green.

He is ever hopeful it seems and that is what we have to hang on to.

Hope.

My thoughts turn to:

Light a candle, light one more,
bring your hope to winter’s door;

Hear the bells as out they chime
have hope of warmth in frosty rime;

Let your heart speak love and peace,
If we all sign up to this
Then it is within our reach;

So light your candle;
pray your prayer;
And with love we will get there.

Very best wishes – Denny Bradbury 💚

Autumn poems, Classical Korean poetry, Keats - To Autumn, Kim Cheon Taek (1690), Thomas Hardy

As autumn comes it brings with it such changes in England’s countryside with sometimes subtle and sometimes glaring changes of colour in the hedgerows that poets across the ages have been inspired to put pen to paper. Thank you Thomas Hardy for – Autumn in King’s Hintock Park:(1st verse)

Here by the baring bough
Raking up leaves,
Often I ponder how
Springtime deceives,-
I, an old woman now,
Raking up leaves.

Thank you Keats for – To Autumn:(1st verse)

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close-pbosomed friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For summer has o’er brimmed their clammy cells.

From classical Korean Sijo poetry this gem- thank you Kim Cheon Taek (1690)

Such white clouds and fresh blue streams all around me have me absorbed!
Autumn leaves stained in fall’s wind are more splendid than spring flowers.
Heaven’s sky has made just for me such golden light it fashioned.

Humbly I offer my short burst of autumn appreciation:

Five fat pheasants strut across the frosted lawn,
mown in concentric circles;
one brave squirrel darts and leaps, creeping nearer
to the edge of their society.

This is just part of a longer poem “Quiet Hampshire Morning”

With very best wishes for a peaceful and loving world – Denny Bradbury (Green Poet)💚

Autumn – 2017

Late September and there are fewer hips and haws than last year;

it is not yet a spectacular colourful scene.

Leaves are just beginning to turn and drift down to the brown earth

that is, all except the horse chestnuts that turned in August and are now

done.

Birds carol a different morning tune – still vigorous but it is the song of

harvest not procreation;

One small red throated finch like bird sang his heart out in full glory and

joy for the world – that is how I heard it.

I wandered on as my dog smelt the tracks of deer and foxes – even I could smell

the fox and see by my faithful hound where his tracks had been.

The light is different now – clearer somehow as nature sweeps all before her in

autumn’s glorious, gorgeous, gathering before the cold of winter sleep sets in.

Wildly the unruly skein of geese fly one way then another across the pale blue sky;

the leader must be a rookie as they go in haphazard zig-zags for food and water;

we all must learn our craft sometime – and this was her turn –

she will not make those mistakes again.

I love their cries as they buffet about – it is the sound of life – so different from my own;

but we all share this world and woe betide us if we think, for one moment, that

we are more important than those geese.

With every good wish for the world.

Fly Free Denny Bradbury, WB Yeats - The Hawk

On seeing a group of wonderful birds of prey – hooded and belled for human amusement I became both sad and enraged for them. I have published my poem on this subject before and it is in my anthology De-Versify ‘Fly free – be not halt for me’. Browsing through Yeats I lighted upon his poem ‘The Hawk’. The middle verse is the hawk talking back – I love it:

….

‘I will not be clapped in a hood,
Nor a cage, nor alight upon wrist,
Now I have learnt to be proud
Hovering over the wood
In the broken mist
Or tumbling cloud.’

….

Perhaps we might listen more to what our wild creatures are trying to tell us.

Love and peace and best wishes for a restful or joy filled Sunday – Denny Bradbury – Green Poet💚

Basho - haiku, Japanese Haiku, Summer haiku

The more I learn about or delve into the different disciplines of Japanese, Chinese or Korean poetry the I become involved in their history and fall for their attitude, especially towards nature. I love nature, the natural world, the animals, insects etc without which we would be treeless and plantless and starving.

Basho was one of the more well known Japanese poets, not only of his time, here I offer one of his summer haiku for your consideration. Then in all humility I will offer one of my own. Not for comparison but as a mark of respect for the medium.

Basho –

summer grasses …
traces of dreams
of ancient warriors

Denny Bradbury

oak tree in full leaf
what do you keep in your depths
small creatures hiding

Very best wishes for a good summer – praying for those in trouble and turmoil
