Autumn Prose/Poetry, National Poetry Day

Autumn – 2017

Late September and there are fewer hips and haws than last year;

it is not yet a spectacular colourful scene.

Leaves are just beginning to turn and drift down to the brown earth

that is, all except the horse chestnuts that turned in August and are now

done.

Birds carol a different morning tune – still vigorous but it is the song of

harvest not procreation;

One small red throated finch like bird sang his heart out in full glory and

joy for the world – that is how I heard it.

I wandered on as my dog smelt the tracks of deer and foxes – even I could smell

the fox and see by my faithful hound where his tracks had been.

The light is different now – clearer somehow as nature sweeps all before her in

autumn’s glorious, gorgeous, gathering before the cold of winter sleep sets in.

Wildly the unruly skein of geese fly one way then another across the pale blue sky;

the leader must be a rookie as they go in haphazard zig-zags for food and water;

we all must learn our craft sometime – and this was her turn –

she will not make those mistakes again.

I love their cries as they buffet about – it is the sound of life – so different from my own;

but we all share this world and woe betide us if we think, for one moment, that

we are more important than those geese.

Fly Free Denny Bradbury, WB Yeats - The Hawk

On seeing a group of wonderful birds of prey – hooded and belled for human amusement I became both sad and enraged for them. I have published my poem on this subject before and it is in my anthology De-Versify ‘Fly free – be not halt for me’. Browsing through Yeats I lighted upon his poem ‘The Hawk’. The middle verse is the hawk talking back – I love it:

….

‘I will not be clapped in a hood,
Nor a cage, nor alight upon wrist,
Now I have learnt to be proud
Hovering over the wood
In the broken mist
Or tumbling cloud.’

….

Perhaps we might listen more to what our wild creatures are trying to tell us.

Love and peace and best wishes for a restful or joy filled Sunday – Denny Bradbury – Green Poet💚

Basho - haiku, Japanese Haiku, Summer haiku

The more I learn about or delve into the different disciplines of Japanese, Chinese or Korean poetry the I become involved in their history and fall for their attitude, especially towards nature. I love nature, the natural world, the animals, insects etc without which we would be treeless and plantless and starving.

Basho was one of the more well known Japanese poets, not only of his time, here I offer one of his summer haiku for your consideration. Then in all humility I will offer one of my own. Not for comparison but as a mark of respect for the medium.

Basho –

summer grasses …
traces of dreams
of ancient warriors

what do you keep in your depths
small creatures hiding

Very best wishes for a good summer – praying for those in trouble and turmoil

Night poetry, Silver by Walter de la Mare, Walter de la Mare

I have recently discovered an old poetry book that my mother read.  It is full of treasure.  It does seem to me however that the mood was often rather fatalistic about the world, war and death.  Many looked to the moon for inspiration which may have seemed to be the one constant that they could rely on.  I would like to share one such from Walter de la Mare – Silver

Slowly, silently, now the moon
Walks in the night in her silver shoon;
This way, and that, she peers, and sees
Silver fruit upon silver trees;
One by one the casements catch
her beams beneath the silvery thatch;
Couched in his kennel, like a log,
With paws of silver sleeps the dog;
From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep
Of doves in a silver-feathered sleep;
A harvest mouse goes scampering by,
With silver claws, and silver eye;
And moveless fish in the water gleam,
By silver reeds in a silver stream.

Not perhaps one of his most profound but I like it as it is full of the imagery of night.

Very best wishes – Denny Bradbury – Green Poet

Lent, Poetry for Lent

The last foray into daily thoughts – as random as life –

36th

Daffodil yellow filled the eye
now they have gone so transitory but so beautiful
no doubt why

everything has its life span
usefulness and beauty fill the hours while we live work and love
it is the world’s way

37th

Cold cold sun of Holy Week
bitter wind blows from the east making us wait for joy
we wait yet

Warmth of a smile
a friendly face or a kind word and the biting wind
lessens to nothing

38th

In these Islands
battered by Atlantic storms prey to capricious bitter easterly winds
we are driven by the weather

Today is dull and cold
and so are my thoughts as they turn forward to dreams
of summer and warmth

39th

The wait is almost over
it has been a long forty days and nights
how much more for a soul

wandering in the mountains
the cold nights and relentless days leading him to pain
and death

40th

The wait is over
the day has come it is a bleak day but the darkness of the hour
will be transient

The sun will rise again
as we trust and believe
It will be glorious
