As with all families and friends there are times when the world seems to have nothing to offer but pain and hurt. Separation, dementia, cancer or financial concerns in this economic gloom may cause such grief that some cannot find a way through the morass. One of the poems written in my ‘A Denagerie of Poems’ offers hope. It is my thought that there is always a vision of hope on the horizon which is there to sustain us through the bad times.

Close the doors to all the pain; close them tight don’t let them in; those problems and those thoughts of yours; they’re past and dead and gone off course

No more the wounded victim plain; no more the thief can take and sin; no more will that poor devil curse; no more no more the hurt and worse

New doors will open you will see; fresh winds will blow through endlessly; you only have to pick and choose; and ride the waves that rise for you

Denny Bradbury, the meaning of Westminster Abbey, Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey

I love to browse around cathedrals. Usually the medieval ones hold the most interest for me although I have been to Coventry and was blown away by the sincerity of the place with its overwhelming sense of reconcilliation. However on Friday last week I visited Westminster Abbey, the last time I was there I was a child. The tomb of the unknown soldier and poet’s corner were a must and never fail to give one a sense of awe and humility but the aspect that struck me most was the beautiful vaulted ceiling, arguably the most spiritually sensitive of any ceiling in the world, magnificent in its clarity and purity.

Denny Bradury looks back on the feedback she’s received on her book The Reunion and explains why writing can be such a personal experience.  Good feedback is always appreciated and useful when it comes to spurring on the writing process.

Denny is now working on her new book Borvo, which details the life of a Pagan healer during King Alfred’s reign in the 9th Century.

Denny Bradbury has been speaking about how to get involved in writing and where to look for inspiration.  Denny explains how rich and full life can be and how every path has a story.  You’ll find that you won’t have to go far and you will find yourself a story.  Denny also reflects on how the landscape of writing is changing thanks to technology, but acknowledges the dynamic change in language.  Denny also explains how she got into writing, collecting little life stories in a small book.  People are fascinating and inspiration can come from anywhere.

Night Time

Why writing at night can be a wonderful experience

Often when the night comes and sleep eludes us we let our minds roam to places both pleasant and dark. One such night a while ago I mused on the difference between day and night, specifically 4 o’clock. A poem emerged which gave tribute to Catherine of Braganza who brought with her a love of tea and consequently tea time. The night time verses show how we can turn the darkness to our advantage and clear away some unproductive thoughts, here are a couple of verses from a longer poem:

Those distant sun filled memories of tea upon the lawn; Drive us mad with fever as we wait upon the dawn

With what demonic pleasure do the night elves sit and wait; to curse you with each measure of the seconds on your plate

Yet night is often when our darkest thoughts come home; they’re sorted into status, by morning they are gone
